Oskus Entertainment dedicated this years’ World Music Day to the Oscar Winner Maestro of Music A.R. Rehman by organising a musical evening which marked performances by bands Kash, Asthtva and Rishi Inc.“Music fills the infinite between two souls”, said poet, musician, painter, playwright and Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Many celebrations start as a local event and yet become a celebration of humanity as a whole. World Music Day is one such day which began in France when, in 1976, American musician Joel Cohen, proposed an all-night music celebration to mark the beginning of the summer solstice. And since then the World Music Day is celebrated on June 21 to relive the magical gift of music.35 years onwards, more than 32 countries worldwide celebrate World Music Day in their own way with their own set of music. It is a celebrated as a day of free music, where musicians – local and amateur are encouraged to perform at public spaces without any restriction.Folk, contemporary, blues and Bollywood….over the years, music has changed. From the wonderful instrumental pieces of Mozart to the vivacious numbers of Beyonce…And from the beautiful lyrics of Frank Sinatra to the loud and in-your-face rap numbers of Eminem! Music has definitely come a long way on the international scene. The local and regional music has also witnessed lots of experiments over the years. The list keeps changing depending upon place and people but World Music Day is all about music everywhere.

There is one more thing that has happened, especially with the Indian rock scene in particular and Indian music in general. And that is the fusion in terms of dialects, musical instruments, tempo, lyrics, emotions and basic tunes. The way A R Rehman fuses music with melody and rhythm with harmony to rock without making it harsh on heart, and minds and ears of course, it has slowly acted as a catalyst of Indianisation of the whole rock scene as well. Rehman has been the greatest musical hero ever born in India but an Oscar for Jai Ho changed that and he became an icon, a statement since then.Delhi based Oskus Entertainment organised a non-profitable musical show at the CentreStage Mall, Noida where three bands dedicated the World Music Day to the Maestro of Music A R Rehman. Dozens of music lovers, many of them from Darjeeling and rest of northeast gathered to make it memorable. The musical evening saw performances of Rehman’s memorable numbers like ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ and ‘Hum rahe ya na rahe kal’. Operation Head of Oskus Entertainment Bernard Bhutia claimed that an event as such has never been done before in Northern India.

On the fateful musical event was also present Anmol Rai, the Director of the Noida School of Rock. When I asked Mr Rai how would he describe Rehman, he said “Rehman has done what no other Indian did. He brought the Indian music on the world stage. Even Hindi songs are now getting international attention.” Talking about the Indian music scenario he said that earlier we used to have classical and folk music but now we have started looking out of the box. “We see many Hindi and other regional languages’ lyrics coming up with western beats and fusion music. In terms of music, there is no difference. It’s universal”, said Rai.In a world marred by so much of differences music is one hope that as Bono put it, can change the world because it can change people.
